Journey through Perthshire through the eyes of Outlander

A guest post from Visit Scotland -Perthshire offers up the perfect location to explore all that Scotland offers, not forgetting the chance to follow in the footsteps of Outlander’s leading characters, Claire and Jamie, to explore the awe-inspiring locations where Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels are set, and the TV series filmed.

Drummond Castle Gardens

Drummond Castle Gardens is one of Europe’s most important and impressive formal gardens which also took a leading role in the popular series in Season two when the venue stood in for the ornate park and orchard of the Palace of Versailles in France. Designed in the Italian parterre style, the gardens are approached by a mile-long driveway of beech trees that leads to the imposing walls of Drummond Castle. Look out for the peacocks which lend an aristocratic air to the garden’s scenery.

Kinloch Rannoch

The idyllic area around Loch Rannoch and Kinloch Rannoch is used as a backdrop for Claire and Frank’s second honeymoon. The series’ most iconic scenes of Claire travelling back in time to 1743 at Craigh na were set at Kinloch Rannoch. The stone circles depicted in the TV series may not be there in real life, but that doesn’t make the location any less magical.

Tibbermore Parish Church

This 16th century church, portrayed as Cranesmuir Church, set the scene for the infamous witch trial. You can even stand in the pulpit as Claire and Geillis did – if you dare!

River Edge Lodges

River Edge Lodges star in season four. One of the lodges was used as a green room for the actors, with scenes filmed outside it, while the second lodge was transformed by covering the kitchen units with period tiles, painting the walls, replacing the curtains and blinds and covering light switches — all done with amazing attention to detail.
